A Roman Guide’s Diary: The Day I Made History Fun for a Six-Year-Old

Ciao, travelers! I’m Eni, your storyteller and family tour guide in Rome. Every group I meet gives me a new story—but sometimes, a single moment reminds me why I do what I do. Let me take you behind the scenes on a special day with a family whose youngest skeptic became my star explorer.

Meeting the Family

It was a bright spring morning when I greeted the Rossi family at their hotel in central Rome. Parents, two teens, and little Matteo, age six. Matteo hid half-behind his mom, clutching a plastic dinosaur. “He’s not sure about all this history stuff,” his dad whispered.

I smiled. I’ve seen this before: Rome’s splendor can be overwhelming, especially for little ones!

Connecting with Curiosity

We started at the Colosseum. Instead of beginning with dusty dates, I knelt down to Matteo’s eye-level.

“Do you think dinosaurs ever visited the Colosseum?”

His eyes lit up. Right away, I turned the amphitheater into a giant arena where brave “gladiator-dinosaurs” could have battled under the Roman sun (with Matteo as the T-Rex champion, of course).

Soon, his older siblings jumped in, rooting for Team Triceratops. The Colosseum’s ancient stones became a playground for imagination.

From Boredom to Excitement

As we wandered through arches and tunnels, I shared stories tailored to every age:

– For Matteo: “How many lions do you think fit under the arena?” (Spoiler: A lot!)

– For the teens: “Did you know some gladiators became as famous as rock stars?”

– For the parents: Insights on ancient engineering and crowd control.

We paused for gelato, of course. While the adults chatted, Matteo drew a picture of the “Colosseum Dinosaur Battle.” He showed it to a nearby guard, who gave him a high five.

The Turning Point

Later, at the Roman Forum, I invited Matteo to look for “hidden faces” in the ancient statues—a scavenger hunt. His excitement grew: “Look, another bearded Roman!” Suddenly, he was leading the group, pointing out carved animals and daring his siblings to a contest for who could spot the strangest ancient detail.

Why These Moments Matter

By the end of the tour, Matteo wasn’t clinging to his mom—he was asking, “Where can we see more gladiator stuff?” More importantly, his parents told me, “We never imagined both our teenager and our youngest would love this much.”

That’s why I believe great tours aren’t about just facts or monuments—they’re about finding the story each traveler needs to spark joy and wonder, at any age.

Your Family’s Story Awaits

Are you worried your youngest will be bored? Or that your teens will roll their eyes at “more old ruins”? As your guide, I promise to turn ancient Rome into your family’s own living storybook—filled with adventure, laughter, and memories you’ll cherish long after the trip.
